English 306J 1/18/10

Women love magazines such as Cosmo, Shape, and Victoria's Secret. Women also hate magazines such as Cosmo, Shape, and Victoria's Secret. The way the models and celebrities look in these magazines can make a women feel happy, satisfied, grateful, powerful, determined, courageous, and just overall better about themselves. They can also make a women feel sad, miserable, inferior, fat, worthless, hopeless, offended, pissed off, and depressed.
The way they make women feel good is by showing girls how to look sexy, make them feel in control, show them how to more powerful, give advice on how to improve your relationship with your significant other, or even make you feel good because of the stories and advice they give you on how to keep your man happy in bed.
At the same time, those same examples from above can make women feel slutty due to the way they show models with little to no clothing on, and say how it's fine to dress this way, because if you do, then you'll get that cute guy you like to come over and talk to you. Maybe he'll even buy you a drink or two. How about this one? When a magazine shows or talks about how being super thin is the only way to be happy and once again, get the attention from a guy.
I say these things because as a male, I kind of feel bad for women. All you want to do is please those around you, but it's just so difficult to be both yourself and what others want from you. You want to dress sexy and feel confident about your body and your looks, but at the same time you're worried about being labeled as a slut.
Maybe if you hear it from a guy's perspective (well maybe just mine since I can't speak for all guys) you'll feel better about who you are naturally. As a guy, when I go out or just see girls around campus, I like it more when a girl show's up in a nice pair of jeans with a cute top on that doesn't have her breast all out. Don't get me wrong, I like girls in a dress and heels, but don't get carried away with the length of the dress. To me, if the dress is at an appropriate length, it'll keep more guys looking at what's more important about your body, which would be your face, eyes, smile. That to me is the most important part of a woman's body. Hope this helps you girls out.

  1. Well as another guy, I'm going to have to agree with Robert on this one. I feel bad that girls think they have to go through so much in order to grab our attention. I've always lived by this feeling of, if they don't like me for who I am, then what kind of a friend/girlfriend would they have been in the first place. I mean personally, I like to look good for both myself and other people, but I'm not going to go to the extent of hours of getting ready or weeks of starving myself. I really hope you girls can feel the same way too. I'm particularly a fan of the "classy" look. I like a girl who can cover herself up and still look good. I don't need a short skirt or a top with her boobs falling out. I think that the magazines out there are giving girls the impression that EVERY guy wants this sexy, provacative, skimpy, girl. It's kind of giving ALL guys a bad reputaton, even the ones who are alright with girls the way they are.

  2. I agree with you about the magazine articles. The captions, models/actresses on the covers and the stories inside make a girl feel so confused. It is extremely hard to balance being pretty v. sexy and coming across as confident and not skanky. Personally, I appreciate the fact that you (a guy) prefer a girl to dress a little more conservative and that you look at her eyes and smile (not just her butt and boobs), I think knowing that gives girls more confidence. Honestly, if you think about it the best part of a relationship is when you are comfortable enough with each other to dress in sweats and a t-shirt. I think that if a woman dresses like that in front a guy than that shows that she can really be herself and that she trusts the guy.
